Feeling empty inside? Do you keep crying for no reason? Are all the Prada sunglasses in the world not enough to fill the void in your heart? Sometimes it helps to notice how crappy the world around you is, and channel your misery into that. Pick a cause, any cause. Here are a few examples to get you started: FREE NELSON MANDELA. SAVE THE DOLPHINS. MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING. ARTS FUNDING. FUCK POTTERY BARN. WALMART IS UPSETTING THE GAYS. SOMETHING ABOUT AFRICA; THEY'RE PRETTY F'ED UP OVER THERE. END ANIMAL TESTING. STOP THOSE PEOPLE AT THE OPERA FROM WEARING FUR COLLARS. ETC, ETC, ETC. Does this help? Remember, nothing soothes a turbulent soul like the realization that you are a kinder, more generous person that everyone else around you. Also, you do not have flies on your face and rags on your feet like the people you are helping. Life is good.*
On that note, Two Hours Traffic is ecstatic to be producing The Altruists, a quirky dark comedy from the king of fucked up families, playwright Nicky Silver.
The Altruists is the story of highly motivated, highly self absorbed, underly informed activists. They rally hard and loud, for what they're not sure, but they do it with gusto. Ronald (Played by Two Hours' Traffic company member Michael Ledezma) is at the center of the play. A pushover with a heart of gold he has fallen in love with a prostitute (Lance, played by Jeff Orton of Absurd Reality's Angels in America) and is determined to help him clean his life up, even if it means allotting a shelf in his apartment for crack storage. Meanwhile, Ronald's sister Sydney (Sarah Petty of Reefer Madness: The Musical!), an aging soap star, has gotten into a fight with her live in boyfriend Ethan (Bill Thompson of Vampire Lesbians of Sodom), which results in sloppy prescription pill induced gunshots. Cybil (company member Felisa Smithson), a fellow activist, and psuedo lesbian, is attempting to break up with her violent girlfriend Audrey. The true nature of the supposed altruistic characters is revealed when they are forced to deal with the murder of one of their own.
In the politically charged air of an election year, The Altruists begs the question: What are we fighting for? No really, I can't remember...what? Get your tickets now. Do it.
